iPhone 365: One year through the lens of a phone.

On Feb. 17th 2010, I decided to start a 365 photo project using the iPhone. I was inspired by a friend, who had just completed one using film cameras. Using the iPhone for this project was a way to make sure that I always have a camera with me as I always carry my iPhone with me. Also I wanted to explore the photographic capabilities of my favorite toy. I finished successfully on Feb. 16th 2011. Another thing that I can now mark as checked on my bucket list… You can check the whole set my flickr. Below is a mosaic of all the pictures taken during the year.

General Impressions

A year is not very long, but when you have to take a picture every, it might seems like it will never end. Nonetheless I had a great time doing it. Of course, the photo quality is not there and I don’t particularly care about it. The pictures are of course very personal, but all of them remind me of that particular day. During that year I’ve got through significant events such as moving to a new place, getting in and out of a relationship, etc…

The flow of inspiration was nothing but constant. Some days, even with an iPhone I struggled to take a picture. On the other hand, such a project forces you to take a whole new look at the little things of your daily life. I must be honest and say that I was more than tired of the project near the end.

The Setup

The rules were simple. Shoot, Post-process and Upload using the iPhone. I started the project using an iPhone 3G and I upgraded to an iPhone 4 on Nov. 7th 2010. I must say that the HDR capabilities of the iPhone 4 as well as the two cameras on it got me sold… Below rests my old iPhone 3G.

The Apps

The iPhone amazed me as far as it can go with editing photos. On the Mac, I never wanted to use Photoshop because it was too much complicated. On the iPhone, you can almost do everything you do in Photoshop. Here is the list of apps I used during the entire project:

  • Built-in Camera
  • PS Express
  • Flickit Pro
  • Diptic
  • Cool Fx
  • Ransom
  • Polarize
  • Hipstamatic
  • Genius
  • Pano
  • ColorSplash
  • Mill Colour
  • Gorillacam
  • Phototreats
  • Comic Touch
  • TiltShiftGen
  • Phoster

My Top 5 Photos

Most of the photos were crappy of course, but here is my top 5 photos.

3/365: Photo Vie.

241/365: Forgotten memories...

316/365: Used to be...

140/365: Crowd in motion.

305/365: The red window.

What’s Next?

I declared in this tweet that I was going to start another iPhone project. But after thinking about it. I’ll take a long a deserved break. So if you are wondering if the whole experience was worth while, I’d say YES. I might start another 365 in the future, but this time more directed with weekly themes or something like that.
